WHAT DOES IT TAKE
TO BE A DOVE?
Money? Experience? Brains? Time?
All of those help, but most of us don't have enough money
to do a lot of good for others. But we do have time, brains,
and yes, experience. Think of your daily life, things you do
every day. How many of those things create difficulties for
others? How could we use our skills to help them? Here
are a few suggestions. As you read through them, you will
probably think of others.
- Next time you bake a cake or cookies, take a slice of
cake or a few cookies to your shut-in or senior
neighbor. Remember a lot of seniors, especially men,
do not bake. They also don't cook much for themselves
so a plate of spaghetti or a casserole not only would lift
their spirits, but you'd know they had a least one good
meal.
- Since you are reading this you obviously have a
computer. How many lonely people do you know that
have a computer? Send them an email or e-card. Pick
one that has an uplifting message, brighten their day.
- If the neighbor boy's father doesn't live in the home, or
has to work, take the child to a little league ball game
the next time your son plays. Not only will the child
enjoy it, but the father will be appreciative and you just
might find it's fun to have a boy to talk to while
watching your son play, especially if you're a mother
than doesn't quite understand the game.
- Encourage your young children to color pictures, then
give them to an older neighbor that doesn't have
grandchildren living close by. Not only will it cheer the
neighbor, but your child will get praise from someone
other than their parents. Both the giver and the
recipient benefit. (Note: There are several Christian
web sites that offer coloring pages that are not only
beautiful, but carry a good message.)
- Does your teens have a friend who is troubled? Most of
the Christian web sites have teen help sections. When
your teens see something that might help, suggest they
print it for the friend, or refer them to the web site.
- Time to divide plants in your yard? Why not give one
to a neighbor? Remember, not everyone is able or
knows how to plant them, so offer to help.

When I stand before God at the end of my
life, I would hope that I would not have a
single bit of talent left, and could say, "I
used everything you gave me."

A PRAYER
OF THOSE WHO CARE
I do not know how long I'll live,
but while I live, Lord, let me give.
Some comfort to someone in need,
by smile or nod, kind word or deed.
And let me do what 'er I can,
to ease things for my fellow man.
I want naught but to do my part
to lift a tired, weary heart,
To change folks' frowns to smiles again.
Then I will not have lived in vain,
And I'll care not how long I live,
if I can give and give and give.
